Your digital photo legacy is the collection of images, videos, stories and memories you want to pass on to your family. It’s the modern equivalent of the family photo album — except now it lives across devices, clouds, apps and decades of technology.

When we talk about inheriting your family’s photos, we now need to consider the digital aspect, not just the physical photo albums… We take more photos today than any generation before us — yet we’re also at the greatest risk of losing them. Phones break, accounts get locked, passwords forgotten, hard drives fail, CDs get scratched and thousands of precious moments quietly disappear into digital clutter.

Why Your Digital Photo Legacy Matters

Your photos are more than files. They are:

• Evidence of your family’s story
• A connection between generations
• A source of comfort, joy and identity
• A record of the moments that shaped you.

Creating a digital photo legacy isn’t about perfection – your photos don’t need to be perfectly organised to take this first step. It’s about intention. It’s about ensuring that the people you love can find, enjoy and share the memories that matter most.

Document Your Digital Legacy for Your Family

Create a simple ‘Photo Legacy Guide’. This guide becomes a gift — a roadmap to your family history. It is as simple as a one-page list of instructions that includes:

• Where your photos are saved: Most families have photos scattered everywhere. Create a list of devices and accounts where your digital photos are saved: hard drives, Cloud storage locations, computers, CDs, etc
• How to access: Instructions for accessing your devices or accounts – login details or passwords (just ensure these are kept secure!)
• What stories or context matter: Notes about important albums, people or events. Photos become irrelevant if your family don’t know who is in them, where they were taken and why they are important to your family’s story.

Once this is completed, here are some additional steps you can take to ensure your photos are relevant and accessible:

• Remove the clutter: screenshots, shopping lists, etc. I am not sure your family are going to want to see a photo of what you ate at that restaurant in 2023…
• Back up! A digital legacy is only as strong as its backup plan. Check out our 3-2-1 backup plan and understand the difference between backup and sync
• Set up a Legacy Contact on your Apple or Google account, so that your family can access your photos saved in iCloud or Google Photos.
• Organise your digital photos! This is a big one.
